Practical Information
Chiang Mai is a beautiful, vibrant and historic city to visit, and is easy to get to from the Foundation base. Although volunteers should be aware that it is about a 20 minute drive from where we are located in the rural village of Mae Kue, dependent on traffic conditions. Public transport to the city is also easy with an abundance of cheap taxi’s or another option would be renting a motorcycle for around 2 to 3,000 baht per month. (Please remember to include the rent of a helmet as well)
However the small town of Bo Sang which neighbors Mae Kue is equally fascinating, and best known for its fame as the producer of decorative umbrella’s & parasols. With regular street markets, combined with all the major banks and a Tesco Lotus, Bo Sang, only a few minutes away from the Foundation has everything one would need.
All volunteers with the Foundation are required to provide their own financial support, unlike other charities we don’t charge you to work with us! Volunteers are also asked to arrange their own travel visa’s through your nearest Thai Embassy or Consulate. Although if you need any advice please do not hesitate to ask.
Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of 3 days per week, and to arrange their working hours in advance with the management. The Foundation’s workshop staff work Monday to Saturday 8.30am until 5pm. Should a volunteer require extra days off, we ask that they inform us at least two days in advance, thank you.
The Foundation also has its own publication, ‘A Volunteer Handbook – Getting It Right’ an interesting and very informative book which describes all aspects of volunteering and working abroad. For a copy of the book we ask for a donation of $7 to cover the costs of posting and packaging. Also your mailing address.
