The Next Generation
Due to deeply imbedded historical and social traditions here in Thailand, the Thai people have little or no awareness about the everyday challenges facing disabled Thai citizens. Most public places are inaccessible to people with mobility problems, including public buildings, ATM machines, curbs, shops and even telephone booths.
Because of the attitudes towards disability, and the unforgiving environment in which a disabled person must conquer to even leave their home, 75% of disabled persons who have reached an employable age are unemployed.
This new project will focus on introducing the 'next generation of decision makers' in Thailand...the children...to what it is to be disabled - whether disabilities involves blindness, mobility problems, hearing problems or the many forms and degrees of intellectual disability.
We will be adopting a kinship approach similar to that of the very successful 'Dr Condom' initiative. Rather than impose a forced message, we want able-bodied students to 'learn as they laugh'. Complaining or nagging about negative attitudes and educational failures is not our goal. We will take a totally positive approach towards a more enlightened awareness.
