Freedom Wheelchairs' was established by the Foundation in 2000. To date, we remain the only facility in north Thailand producing and servicing free custom made and standard mobility aids for rural poor and needy disabled persons. All of our services are backed by home visits and a needs evaluation for each client.

Originally, our initial disabled staff were trained by British wheelchair engineer Geoffrey Thorsby. We have always continued to both employ and empower disabled persons. Over the years, our workshop has designed and produced a variety of custom made special needs mobility aids including all terrain chairs, reclining chairs for disabled children and young adults. Wheeled gurneys as aids for transport and bathing, head and neck supports, wheelchair activity tables, ramps, walking aids, grab bars, tricycle wheelchairs, standing frames to promote blood circulation, and even several walking aids to assist disabled animals.

Regionally, and because of our broad experience, we have conducted wheelchair training workshops to groups from both Laos and Cambodia. The Foundation has also published the only existing Thai language 'Wheelchair User Manual'. This book is provided free of charge to all our clients. Our foundation has also published several other Thai language free self-help books covering a variety of disability related health issues.

Nowadays, having already distributed over 2,500 wheelchairs and mobility aids, we continue our policy of hands-on and grassroots contact with each of our recipients.
Everything we make includes our free contact and service information and is clearly identified as a “gift and not for sale”.

In order to continue this free life-affirming outreach to rural poor people who cannot walk and who cannot afford to purchase commercial mobility aids, we need and welcome both individual and corporate wheelchair sponsorship. For just a small amount of money your donation can change someone's life, its easy, you can donate the cash for a walking stick or a 'made to measure' wheelchair. Please help us to help these amazing people to challenge the environment around them, give them the same opportunities of able bodied citizens.
